In 2022, we purchased an abandoned land in Spain with the dream of turning it into a thriving homesteading.
Before we can make our dream a reality, we had to make an important decision: Where will we live while we wait for the building permit to restore our stone house?
This article is about the adventure of moving our off grid tiny house from the UK to our abandoned land in Spain.
First Camping Attempt
We initially thought about building a simple off-grid cabin, like the one Dave Whipple from Bushradical built on his land.
Unfortunately, in Spain, such buildings are not permitted on the land 🙁
It was then that we thought about living temporarily in a camping tent, but after the first camping attempt, this proved to be impractical in the long term.
In winter it is too cold, in summer it is too hot, not to mention the snakes that live there.
It became clear to us that we needed a more sustainable and comfortable solution, something like a off grid tiny house.
Returning to the UK
As we are doing the Eridu Life project DEBT FREE, returning to the UK was necessary for financial reasons.
I work as an HGV driver, so I went back to work, saved some money and bought a used caravan that needed repairs before it could be used as our off grid tiny house.
This was a strategic move to ensure we had a sustainable and comfortable off grid tiny house to live during the stone house restoration.
Tiny House Repairs
After a few months of thorough research, I found and purchased an cheap caravan that needed repairs before it could be used as our off grid tiny house.
The repairs were mostly done to the roof and window seals. After a few weeks of work, the caravan repairs was finally completed.
Now that the caravan is ready, it will be our temporary off grid tiny house, providing us with the shelter and basic amenities we need while we work on our abandoned land in Spain.
The Day We Arrived
With the caravan ready, we left the UK behind, crossing the English Channel by train and traveling through France to Spain. It is a three-day journey.
Although we had purchased the land two years prior…
Arriving at the Finca with the caravan marked the true beginning of our homesteading adventure. We were finally on the land and ready to start turning our dream into reality.
Tiny House New Location Revealed
There is a lot that needs to be done on the Finca. Without planning and prioritizing actions, it is easy to become overwhelmed.
The stone house will be restored soon, and the caravan is blocking the access road, so the first job that needs to be done is to clear the path to move the caravan.
I recorded a video showing everything that needs to be done before moving our off grid tiny house to a new location.
Watch the video:
In the above video you will see:
The clearing of the path to move the caravan;
The rescue of the three snakes trapped on the cistern;
The arrival of the new trailer for use in the Finca;
The build of a ramp to moving our off grid tiny house;
Moving Our Off Grid Tiny House
After weeks of hard work, carrying heavy rocks and compacting earth, I finally finished the ramp. It is now time to move the caravan to its new location.
Moving our off grid tiny house to a new location was a slow and careful process. After passing through a very narrow passage, the caravan finally arrived at its new location.
I felt a deep sense of accomplishment 🙂
Conclusion
Moving our tiny off grid home to a new location mark a signification progress in the restoration of the Finca. As it provides us with a safe and comfortable shelter to continue our work.
Our quest to transform this abandoned land into a thriving homestead applying permaculture principles continues. We hope to inspire others to embark on their own off-grid journey.

At first I thought “why doesn’t Ricardo build a wooden cabin?”. Now reading the article I realized that this is not possible in your case. What a shame! Anyway, a second-hand caravan will serve the purpose. Good work! Remember “progress equals happiness”

Hello Stuart. Unfortunately we can’t build a wodden cabin. That would be cool! The caravan was a good choice and does its job. Thank you for your comment 🙂
