Building the Off Grid Water System for Our Abandoned Farm in Spain

Reading time: 3 minutes

We start building the off grid water system for our abandoned farm in Spain, and this article is about that.

I am very happy with the progress of this water storage sytem. We are one step away from having running water at the Finca.

Jim Rohn used to say that: Progress equals Happiness.

How true this is. Because happiness is the feeling I have in my heart.

With this first step completed, the vision of living off the grid on our abandoned farm in Spain becomes more real.

Building the Off Grid Water System

Without water we cannot survive more than a few days.
Without water we cannot grow fruits or vegetables;

For all these reasons, we put all our efforts into building this off-grid water system for our abandoned Finca in Spain.

In 2020 we sold our house in the UK. In 2022 we bought our abandoned Finca in Spain.

At that time, we did not have any type of water storage system in place.

What we had at the Finca was:

The rainwater cistern, which was broken;
The water well, which was also broken;

Before starting these off grid projects, we researched a lot about life off grid.

We learned that the simplest and quickest way to have water stored or running water in our Finca was to use IBC totes.

Water Storage with IBC Totes

The off grid water system we designed for our abandoned farm in Spain is not that complex.

It just requires several construction steps.

The first of these steps was to build a platform that would support two IBC totes for use as off grid water storage for our Finca.

Finding the right location to build the platform for the IBC totes was easy.

As the land is between two mountains, I chose the highest terrace, cleaned it, dealt with the snakes and built the platform.

I recorded a video for YouTube showing the construction of this part of the off-grid water system.

Watch the video:

In the video you will see:

The materials used in this project;
Our struggles and challenges;
The construction of the water storage;
Snakes are all around us;
Why did we buy this land;

The First Step of Our Rainwater System

In the video you will see the challenges of constructing the off grid water storage.

In future this water storage system will become part our rainwater harvesting system.

There are many other steps to be done before we have running water at the Finca. But this first step was the most important one.

Other challenge we are facing, is not having internet access at our abandoned Finca.

Maybe we will get starlink?

I will soon solve the problem of not having internet access. That is for sure!

That’s it for this article. Did you like it?

  1. The platform looks great. You can see that a lot of work was put into it. Well done!

  2. I like the way you’re making these IBC platforms. The black tarp is well fitted. I think if it protected from the sun it will last for years on. I’m following along on YouTube. Best of luck

    1. Hello Linus. Lots of work involved. I am building this for last a long time. Yes, I am going to protect the black tarp from the UV lights. Appreciate your comment. Thank you for the visit 🙂
